How does the private mode work when visiting profiles on LinkedIn?
When you enable PV mode on LinkedIn, you will be able to browse other users’ profiles without being recognized. When you view someone’s profile in Private mode, your identity will not be revealed, which means the account owner won’t be able to see your account information. Instead, they only see a generic message such as "LinkedIn Member" or "Anonymous LinkedIn Member" in their "Who's Viewed Your Profile" section.
Note: In this mode, LinkedIn also disables your ability to see who has viewed your profile.
Why use Private mode on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn’s Private Mode can be a game-changer depending on your goals. Here are a few scenarios where using it might make your life a lot easier—many of our users have found it incredibly helpful in these situations:
- Researching Competitors or Potential Partners: analyzing competitors' pages on LinkedIn helps you get better in your niche. If you can investigate the pages without being known, you will be under the radar and can evaluate how they are working on their content.
- Job Searching Anonymously: imagine you want to find a new job on LinkedIn and you don't want your current employer to find out. Here's when you can enable the PV mode to stay anonyms.
Is Private mode on LinkedIn free?
Yes, you can enable Private Mode for free on LinkedIn. However, there are some differences between a regular account and a Premium account.
- With a regular account, you won't be able to see who’s viewed your profile while in Private Mode.
- If you have a Premium account, you can still view profiles without revealing your identity, but you'll also be able to see who’s been checking out your profile—even if they have a Premium account themselves.
What Are the Disadvantages of Using Private Mode on LinkedIn?
While Private Mode certainly has its perks, it’s also important to consider a few potential drawbacks.
- Limited Visibility: As explained before, when you're in Private Mode, no one can see your page when you are visiting other profiles, so you miss out on opportunities for people to know you. Some users attract job opportunities in this way!
- Reduced Networking Opportunities: Networking is one of LinkedIn’s biggest strengths, and using Private Mode can hinder that. As a result of stopping others from viewing your profile, you will have less chance to make more connections.
- Potential Trust Issues: Some users may feel that browsing anonymously makes you appear secretive or untrustworthy. It’s important to balance privacy with transparency, especially if you’re building professional relationships. So, by enabling Private mode you may seem deceitful.
- Lack of Insights: When you're in Private Mode, you lose access to the list of people who have visited your profile, which could otherwise help you gauge interest and build connections.
Ultimately, it’s all about finding the right balance. While Private Mode can be super useful in certain situations, you don’t want to miss out on valuable networking opportunities either. So, think carefully about when to use it—and don’t be afraid to switch it off when you want to show up and connect with others more openly.
